Schemata, Learning and Conceptual Landscapes

چکیده

How are concepts represented? This is a question that must be asked and at least partially answered by any theory of cognition. Within cognitive liguistics one argues that the nature of the cognitive representations determines the structure of language (e. g. Lakoff 1987). The usual approach is to try to reveal the underlying representations by an extensive analysis of human language. I will try the opposite approach and start with an analysis of the representations in neural networks and show that they impose some non-trivial constraints on the nature of conceptual representations that can be used to predict some general properties of human language and its acquisition.

Meaningfulness of Religious Language in the Light of Conceptual Metaphorical Use of Image Schema: A Cognitive Semantic Approach

According to modern religious studies, religions are rooted in certain metaphorical representations, so they are metaphorical in nature. This article aims to show, first, how conceptual metaphors employ image schemas to make our language meaningful, and then to assert that image-schematic structure of religious expressions, by which religious metaphors conceptualize abstract meanings, is the ba...

Genetic Algorithms and Relational Landscapes

A DGA is a genetic algorithm with novel features: relational schemata. These structures allow a more natural expression of relations existing between loci. Indeed, schemata in standard genetic algorithms can only specify values for each locus. Relational schemata are based on the notion of duality: a schema can be represented by two strings. The intent of this paper is to show the superiority o...

Reducing the search space for conceptual schema transformation

In this paper we focus on the transformation of a conceptual schema into an internal schema. For a given conceptual schema, quite a number of internal schemata can be derived. This number can be reduced by imposing restrictions on internal schemata. We present a transformation algorithm that can generate internal schemata of several types (including the relational model and the NF 2 model). Gui...

Conceptual-level Schemata to Object Oriented Implementation Level Schemata

ABSTRACT Conceptual level database design should be managed independently of its implementation. Therefore, once a conceptual level schema has been completed, some transformation method must exist which can be used in the construction of an implementation level design supported by the target model (e.g., relational, objectoriented, network). This paper provides a method for the transformation o...

Schemata as Building Blocks: Does Size Matter?

We analyze the schema theorem and the building block hypothesis using a recently derived, exact schemata evolution equation. We derive a new schema theorem based on the concept of eeective tness showing that schemata of higher than average eeective tness receive an exponentially increasing number of trials over time. The building block hypothesis is a natural consequence in that the equation sh...
